One of the first things you need to so when you are having slide out problems is to check the simplest items to fix first. After all, you may find that your problem is only a loose nut, bolt or wire.

Instead of spending hundreds of dollars at the dealership you can fix these simple problems yourself. Also, you should check to see if any debris, dirt or other objects have blocked your slide out from operating like it should. Again, you can save a lot if you do this fix yourself. Finally, you should check your lubrication spots see if there are any leaks, including water leaks through seals, to see if that is the problem.

Trouble shooting common problems is not that difficult. Sometimes, you may only need to spray a little slide out spray on the rails to get your slide outs moving normally once again. Other times, you may only need a screwdriver or a small wrench to tighten up nuts, bolts, and screws.

On top of that, checking your seals take no tools at all. You can apply sealant with a caulking gun to close up any cracks, loose spots or holes until you get the chance to replace those faulty seals.

If you have a hydraulic powered system you should be careful how you fix it. Even if it is a common problem, you may want a tech qualified in hydraulics to handle your issue. To fix this little problem you should first check to see if your RV or camper is level. Then if your camper is level, then go inside and move any rugs that may be in the way and close all cabinet and other doors. As I was outside beginning to lower the stabilizers, I heard some funny noises as Joyce was extending our powered slide-out dining room.

Oh, oh. Smartly, Joyce had stopped trying to open the slide.

I pushed the button to retract the slide so I could investigate the problem and unfortunately, as I discovered, the drive chain on the working side created extra slack and wrapped itself backwards creating extra force and breaking one of the cables. As Trump would say, a Disaster! So I thought I would share some thoughts on what I should have done e. It is the most common slide unit used by trailer and RV manufacturers today.

If you have an Accu-Slide, you more than likely cannot see the motor, chains or cable adjustments. On our trailer, these items are hidden by trim pieces at the top of the room. Re-installing the trim when we got home required a staple gun, pneumatic brad nailer, and color matched wood putty.

Just like chain-drive garage door openers, our powered slide-out is also chain-driven, which means it is inexpensive to manufacture and can be prone to problems if it was not adjusted properly when the RV or trailer was manufactured. Each end of both chains has a connector attached to two cables. One chain connector has a top and bottom cable that pulls the slide-out, and the other end of each chain has a connector that pulls top and bottom cable to move the slide-out back in.

All of these cables 8 of them are guided by several pulleys. But it works and works well as long it is inspected and maintained. That is why one side moved out and the other stayed in place.

In hindsight, it would have been fairly easy to reconnect the connector that came loose, but now we had a broken cable — not a simple solution when you are parked in a campground. The cable would need to be replaced. One cannot just buy a matching cable, because the originals were installed during manufacture and a made-to-length replacement cable is not available. I know it sounds complicated.

I will post a couple links at the end of this post that will explain this much better than I can. Now, we could camp just fine without the room extended.Slide outs are great. In a crowded RV they can be a life saver and keep the kids from tearing each other apart. While they only add a few more square feet to your RV space, that may be enough to give all your kids the room they need to live peaceably with each Just make sure to make the right adjustments to maintain that peace. How to Adjust RV Slide Out: One of the simplest and cheapest ways to adjust your slide out cable is to look for debris that is blocking the path of the cables or the rails.

You should look for bent pieces of metal and other objects as well. To learn how to make adjustments to the hydraulic or electric slide out mechanisms on your RV, just continue to read our article. We go through the answers, so you do not have to waste time looking for help. There are about 8 or 9 companies that make the slide out hardware and slide systems for RV manufacturers, it is possible that each one has their own way of making adjustments. That is true for the Accu-Slide slide out and they have a service manual to help you make your adjustments.

The best information we can give you here is to read your particular service manual and follow their instructions. The Lippert service manual is found here. There are some conflicting reports about this problem. Some experienced RV owners have stated that the height adjustment is not adjustable. In fact, they have gone as far as to say that there are no qualified techs who can handle the task.

This may be a case where you have to go to the manufacturer or their dealers to get the slide height adjusted correctly. To seal some gaps in the Lippert system, you have to turn both nut B and C to get the gap closed and the seal tighter. There are a few with up and down adjustment nuts but little is available to adjust the tilt. One of the easiest ways to do this, and you can do this yourself if you want, is to go to the motor. If you are having trouble with your slide being misaligned or not moving along the rails like they should, the problem may be in your slide out motor or motors.

Once you get the motor casing door off, you will see some bolts, and wiring. If the bolts are loose, all you have to do is tighten them up and refill the lubricant chamber to get the slide out sliding on the rails correctly. Also, you may see some loose wire connections. Re-tighten those and you should be good to go. Just make sure to use the correct lubricant when you go to oil your slides and rails. There are three main slide out mechanisms in use in RVs today.

One is hydraulic, the second is electric and the third is cable.

There are rare occasions where these cables will be stretched and taken out of alignment. On the Accu-slide system there is a sticker with all the instructions you need. The cable connectors listed on that sticker are color coded to make everything easy.

Read all the information first before starting your adjustment. The key to this adjustment is to make sure you mark the original position of the nut and count your turns. A permanent marker will help you with this but there is one little drawback.

You may not be able to make the adjustment yourself.Almost all classes of RVs are equipped with a minimum of one awning. And RVs with slide-outs, a compartment that extends out from the main cabin providing extra living quarters, are sometimes made with awnings over the slide-out.

In order to get the awning up and stable, the tension needs to be adjusted to get the fabric taut. Different RV makers use different awning systems. The basic premise is the same for the awnings, but the levers and buttons may be in different locations. Step up to the awning and clear out any leaves or twigs from the awning seam. Open the slide-out. Slide-out awnings extend automatically when the slide-out is deployed.

Let both the slide-out and the slide-out awning open all the way. Place the step stool near the lip of the awning. Push the aluminum pole in its extended length up to the RV wall and down to the lip of the awning, under the awning itself.

Position so the pole pushes the awning out, adding tension to the fabric. Special aluminum poles often accompany the RV awning for this use. Inflate the awning's air bladder to provide tension to the awning fabric. If your RV slide-out awning is equipped with an air bladder, use the internal air pump and flip the switch to "on" to inflate and add tension to the fabric.

Push the foam pieces up and under the bottom lip of the awning to provide further support and tension to the fabric if needed. Stuff the foam under the awning roller near the end of the awning itself.
